Paul Mullin moves to Wigan seeking regular playing time guarantee

Wrexham coach Phil Parkinson has confirmed that Paul Mullin’s move to Wigan Athletic was the player’s personal decision. The 30-year-old striker seeks guaranteed playing time ahead of the challenging Championship season.

Mullin — who became one of the stars of the “Welcome to Wrexham” documentary — struggled to maintain form and fitness following back surgery last season. This limited his role in the team, ultimately leading to his loan move to Wigan last week.

“I sat down with Paul in the summer. After a difficult year due to his back operation, I told him ‘It’s up to you, you can come back and compete for a place, or if you want to go somewhere where you know you’re going to play every week, that’s your choice,'” Parkinson stated.

Wrexham faces significant challenges in the Championship — a competition they’ve been absent from since 1982. Parkinson emphasized the importance of building a squad with adequate physical capabilities and depth to handle the demanding schedule, including numerous midweek fixtures.
