Patrick Kluivert Faces Criticism for Not Residing in Indonesia

Patrick Kluivert, appointed by PSSI as head coach of the Indonesia national team in January, is under growing scrutiny for not residing in Indonesia. Many fans and pundits have expressed concern that his physical absence may indicate a lack of full commitment to the team’s development and day-to-day monitoring.

Local media and supporters voice concern

Football observers have pointed out that unlike his predecessor Shin Tae-yong, who lived and worked directly within the Indonesian football ecosystem, Kluivert’s absence could hinder player scouting, training supervision, and tactical implementation. Several fan communities on social media have criticized the arrangement as “detached” and “not serious.”

Mixed performance in early tenure

The former Barcelona striker replaced Shin Tae-yong, despite the South Korean still having two years left on his contract. Since his debut, Kluivert has produced inconsistent results — starting with a 5-1 defeat to Australia following a high-pressing tactic, then securing a narrow 1-0 win over Bahrain by switching to a more pragmatic strategy.

Big tests ahead in World Cup Qualifiers

In two weeks, Rizky Ridho and his teammates will face China and Japan in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers during the June international window — crucial matches that will serve as a litmus test for Kluivert’s approach and his ability to lead the team effectively from afar.
