Oscar Piastri now tops the 2025 Formula 1 drivers’ standings with a 10-point lead after securing his third win of the season. However, McLaren’s dominance might not be as clear-cut as it appears on paper.

The McLaren team has claimed four victories in the first five races of the season, thanks to the strong performances of Piastri and teammate Lando Norris—building on their momentum after winning last year’s Constructors’ Championship.

In Jeddah, Max Verstappen of Red Bull posed a strong challenge to Piastri before receiving a five-second time penalty that impacted the final result.

“This wasn’t an easy win. The start was tough, and the first stint behind Max was challenging. It was only after I got clean air that I could manage the race more comfortably,” Piastri shared.

Lando Norris offered a grounded perspective on the team’s current form.

“Red Bull is just as fast as we are in both qualifying and race pace. People keep saying we’re the best and the fastest, but that might just be because we’ve looked stronger during practice sessions,” he said.

Piastri also acknowledged that while McLaren still has a generally competitive car, Verstappen’s pace at tracks like Jeddah and Suzuka indicates that the performance gap is narrowing between the two top teams.
