Otamendi Confident Messi Will Play in 2026 World Cup

Benfica defender Nicolás Otamendi has expressed optimism that his Argentina national team teammate Lionel Messi will participate in the 2026 World Cup — the tournament set to be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Although the 38-year-old Messi hasn’t confirmed his participation, Otamendi, who has played alongside him in the national team since 2009, maintains strong confidence.

“Obviously, as the World Cup gets closer, he will make his decision. But I don’t see Leo missing out on the World Cup,” Otamendi told Radio La Red.

Currently, Messi continues to demonstrate impressive form with Inter Miami, recording 10 goals and 6 assists in 13 league appearances this season.

“Leo is Leo, the best player in soccer history. The desire to compete, to be there, to help the team — it’s in his DNA. Leo is different,” added Otamendi.

Argentina has already secured their ticket to the 2026 World Cup, following their victories in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and the 2024 Copa América.
