Olivier Giroud reveals reason for poor LAFC performance before joining Lille

Olivier Giroud reveals the reason behind his disappointing performance at LAFC — the MLS playing style didn’t match his characteristics.

The 38-year-old striker agreed to terminate his contract early with LAFC to join Lille on a free transfer. Despite being popular among fans, the French national team striker only scored five goals from 38 appearances.

“The style of play in MLS didn’t suit me. Returning to France after 13 years is an incredible opportunity and challenge,” said Giroud during his introduction at Lille last week.

France’s all-time top scorer with 57 goals has had a brilliant career in Europe — winning Champions League with Chelsea, Serie A with AC Milan, and the 2018 World Cup with Les Bleus.

“I feel physically fit, don’t worry. I’m ready to face this challenge. I feel good for my age and want to keep playing until my body says stop,” added Giroud.

Lille — who finished fifth last season and will compete in Europa League — will start their French League campaign against Brest in mid-August.
