Nova Widianto — head coach of Malaysia’s mixed doubles badminton team (BAM) — is taking a realistic approach ahead of the 2025 Asian Championships in Ningbo, China.

Major challenges emerged when top pair Chen Tang Jie/Toh Ee Wei had to be separated due to ego issues — a decision that led to their withdrawal from the upcoming championship.

For the Ningbo competition, Malaysia will rely on two BAM pairs:

  • Hoo Pang Ron/Cheng Su Yin
  • Roy King Yap/Valeree Siow

Meanwhile, two independent pairs — Goh Soon Huat/Lai Shevon Jemie and Wong Tien Ci/Liem Chiew Sien — will also compete for Malaysia in the championship next week.

With the absence of Chen Tang Jie/Toh Ee Wei—Malaysia’s mixed doubles squad faces an uphill battle in Ningbo.

The tournament will serve as a crucial test for the remaining pairs to prove their capabilities on the international stage and gain valuable experience ahead of future competitions.
