Norris Faces Technical Challenges with McLaren MCL39

Lando Norris faces significant challenges with the McLaren MCL39 — the car feels less responsive at the front, particularly during qualifying sessions that demand peak performance.

The main issue facing the British driver is reduced feedback through the steering wheel — a situation also experienced by his teammate Oscar Piastri, albeit to a lesser degree.

McLaren has developed gradual solutions, including front suspension geometry changes tested by Norris at the Canadian GP. Neil Houldey, McLaren’s technical director, explained that these modifications are designed to improve tire sensitivity at the limit.

  • Piastri has secured four pole positions
  • Norris has achieved two pole positions
  • Point gap between them stands at 22 points

“The suspension is more about giving me better feeling, rather than unlocking more performance from the car. But hopefully better feeling can unlock that performance,” said Norris ahead of the Austrian GP.

McLaren has also introduced new aerodynamic components at the front of the car — changes that will benefit both drivers starting this weekend.
