Nico Williams extends contract with Athletic Club until 2035

According to Athletic Club’s official announcement, Nico Williams has signed a long-term contract extension — rejecting Barcelona’s interest despite their readiness to trigger his €58 million release clause.

The Spain international’s new contract will run until 2035, with a release clause increased by more than 50% from its previous value. This decision ends speculation about his move to Barcelona, despite sporting director Deco’s earlier claims about Williams’ desire to join.

“When you have to make decisions, for me, what weights most is the heart. I am where I want to be, with my people, this is my home. Aupa Athletic!” stated Williams.

The 22-year-old has made 167 appearances and scored 31 goals since his first-team debut in 2021. His biggest achievement was helping the club win the Copa del Rey last year — Athletic Club’s first major trophy in 40 years.

Williams has also become a key player for Spain’s national team with 28 caps and 6 goals, including a crucial goal in the Euro 2024 final victory against England.
