Neymar finally broke his scoring drought by netting his first goal of the season as Santos defeated league leaders Flamengo on Wednesday.

The Brazil national team forward — who had previously turned down an offer to play at the FIFA Club World Cup with Fluminense to focus on recovery — played the full 90 minutes and scored the winning goal in the 84th minute.

“I’m really happy to contribute in every way, both offensively and defensively,” said Neymar.
“I think Flamengo are the best team in the league. This is a new beginning for us. We showed we can compete with anyone in the Brasileirão.”

The 33-year-old admitted he’s not yet fully recovered from the ACL injury he suffered with the Brazil national team in October 2023. However, it was his first full 90-minute appearance since February.

“I want to play 90 minutes every match,” he added.
“I’m not 100%, but I’m getting better every day. My body is still adapting, getting used to everything again.”

Neymar recently signed a contract extension with Santos until the end of the year, with an option to extend through the 2026 World Cup.
