Newcastle Jets have confirmed their separation from coach Rob Stanton — despite extending his contract for two years just months ago. Stanton will continue leading the team until the end of this A-League Men season.

Mark Milligan, former Australian national team midfielder who played for Jets in 2008-2009, is expected to take over the head coach position next season. Milligan currently serves as assistant coach for the Malaysian national team.

Jets currently sit ninth in the standings — seven points away from the finals zone with five matches remaining. The separation comes due to differing views between Stanton and club management regarding football department resources and team development direction.

“The club’s ownership group Maverick Sports Partners and the Board would like to thank Rob for his contribution over the last two seasons in what was a difficult time for the Newcastle Jets organization,” stated the club’s official release.

Milligan, who recorded 80 appearances for the Australian national team, retired as a professional player at the end of the 2020/21 season with Macarthur FC.
