New York Jets owner interested in £200m Crystal Palace investment

According to ESPN, Woody Johnson — owner of NFL’s New York Jets — is in negotiations for a £200 million investment in Crystal Palace — a move that could clear the path for the FA Cup winners to compete in next season’s Europa League.

Crystal Palace — who recently claimed their first major trophy by defeating Manchester City in the FA Cup final — face exclusion from Europa League due to multiclub ownership complications.

John Textor — a minority stakeholder who also holds a majority stake in Ligue 1 side Lyon — failed to place his shares in a blind trust before UEFA’s March 1 deadline. UEFA regulations prohibit two clubs with same ownership from competing in the same competition.

  • Textor is ready to sell his 43% stake in Palace
  • Johnson emerges as the leading candidate to acquire the shares
  • The deal could resolve the multiclub ownership issue

Johnson — who previously served as United States Ambassador to the United Kingdom — had earlier attempted to purchase Chelsea following Roman Abramovich’s UK government sanctions.
