NASCAR Xfinity Series race in Atlanta halted due to lightning

The NASCAR Xfinity Series race at EchoPark Speedway Atlanta experienced a lengthy delay due to lightning strikes in the vicinity. Despite the track remaining dry, safety concerns for spectators and competitors took precedence.

Sheldon Creed led from the start, but the first incident occurred within five laps — Blaine Perkins spun after contact with Christian Eckes. Other drivers including Parker Retzlaff, William Sawalich, and Josh Williams were also involved and sustained damage.

Championship favorite Austin Hill, winner of five out of the last six races, faced technical issues — his No. 21 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet experienced fuel pressure problems forcing him to pit.

The race was red-flagged on lap 34 of the 45-lap opening stage. The running order at that time:

  • Connor Zilisch in second position
  • Sam Mayer in third position
  • Jesse Love in fourth position
  • Taylor Gray in fifth position

After more than an hour delay, racing resumed but ended in a major crash involving multiple cars.
