NASCAR Legend and 1960 Champion Rex White Passes Away

Rex White, the 1960 NASCAR Cup Series champion and Hall of Fame member, has passed away at age 95.

The legendary driver — known as a short track specialist — achieved an impressive record with 28 victories during his career from 1956 to 1964. White made history as NASCAR’s shortest champion, standing at just five feet four inches tall.

As a driver-owner, White triumphed over Richard ‘The King’ Petty to claim the championship in 1960 — a feat he nearly repeated the following year when he finished second in the final standings.

“Rex epitomized the formative days of NASCAR — a true pioneer whose contributions helped shape the foundation of our sport,” said NASCAR CEO Jim France. “His hard work, dedication and talent allowed him to make a living doing what he loved most — racing cars.”
