NASCAR Legal Battle: Rick Ware Racing Countersues Legacy Motor Club

Rick Ware Racing (RWR) has filed a countersuit against Legacy Motor Club (LMC) — responding to the initial lawsuit regarding NASCAR charter sale agreement.

The dispute emerged after Jimmie Johnson-led LMC claimed RWR tried to illegally withdraw from a $45 million charter sale deal — which would become the most expensive charter purchase in history.

Both teams currently hold two charters, with RWR leasing one to RFK Racing for car No. 60. The confusion stems from:

  • RWR claims the deal was meant for 2027 season, not 2026
  • Uncertainty whether Charter No. 27 or No. 36 was being sold
  • RWR states they attempted to return LMC’s $750,000 deposit

“RWR would never have agreed to sell Charter No. 27 before the 2026 season as it would leave us without a charter to race and result in bankruptcy,” RWR stated in court documents.

While Charter No. 27 is currently used by RFK Racing, Charter No. 36 is used by Cody Ware with car No. 51 RWR — creating ambiguity about which charter was actually subject to the agreement.
