MotoGP and Formula 1 officially under single ownership

According to MotoGP.com, the European Commission has granted unconditional approval for MotoGP’s acquisition by Liberty Media — the owner of Formula 1.

The $4.2 billion deal includes the purchase of 86 percent stake in Dorna Sports — MotoGP’s commercial rights holder — scheduled to conclude on July 3.

This acquisition process has taken over a year since its initial announcement in April last year — as the European Commission needed to conduct an in-depth investigation regarding monopoly concerns.

Interestingly, a similar scenario was rejected back in 2006 — but now both prestigious racing championships for two and four-wheeled vehicles will be under single ownership for the first time.
