Moriyasu to Field Young Japan Squad Against Indonesia

Hajime Moriyasu, the head coach of the Japan national football team, has announced plans to utilize a young squad for their final two fixtures in the third round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. The matches will see Japan face Australia and Indonesia, despite already securing a place at the 2026 World Cup.

According to a report from Sponichi, Moriyasu intends to use the opportunity to give Olympic team graduates a chance to gain international exposure in a competitive setting.

“Japan national team coach Hajime Moriyasu will call up a large number of Olympic team graduates for the remaining two World Cup 2026 Qualification matches next month against Australia and Indonesia,” wrote Sponichi.

Fixture details: Australia away, Indonesia at home

The Samurai Blue will play against Australia on June 5, a high-profile away match that will test Japan’s depth. Just five days later, Japan will host Indonesia at Suita City Football Stadium in what will be their final match of the third qualifying round.

While Japan has already topped the group, Moriyasu remains focused on using these matches for tactical development and squad experimentation, particularly ahead of the Olympic Games and future international tournaments.

Focus on long-term goals and talent integration

This strategic rotation offers younger players the chance to step into the senior setup, while experienced names are expected to be rested. Moriyasu’s selection signals Japan’s commitment to sustainable development and squad depth — crucial elements as they prepare for the next phase of the 2026 campaign and beyond.
