Monza loses AC Milan clone identity after Berlusconi family sale

Following relegation from Serie A, Monza sheds its former identity as “AC Milan’s clone” — a nickname that stuck since the Berlusconi family acquired the club.

The moniker emerged when Silvio Berlusconi through his company Fininvest took full ownership of Monza in September 2018 — a move reminiscent of his glory days with AC Milan.

Under Berlusconi’s leadership during 1986-2017, AC Milan achieved remarkable success — securing seven Serie A titles and five Champions League trophies.

After acquiring Monza, the Berlusconi family brought various elements of Milan’s success to their new club. Adriano Galliani — Berlusconi’s right-hand man who succeeded at Milan — was appointed CEO.

Monza also entrusted the coaching position to several former Milan players:

  • Cristian Brocchi
  • Giovanni Stroppa
  • Alessandro Nesta
  • Salvatore Bocchetti
