Major League Soccer (MLS) has made a firm decision regarding Lionel Messi‘s security — his personal bodyguard, Yassine Cheuko, is no longer permitted to operate on the sidelines during Inter Miami matches.

The former Navy SEAL member — who went viral on social media for his vigilant crowd monitoring to prevent pitch invaders — is now only allowed in the locker room and mixed zone areas.

“They don’t allow me to be on the field anymore,” Cheuko told Spanish media.

“I worked in Europe for seven years for Ligue 1 and Champions League with only six pitch invasion incidents. In the United States, in just 20 months, 16 people have already done it. This is a serious issue, let me help Messi.”

This restriction is implemented despite Cheuko‘s role in protecting the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner from potential security threats.

As MLS navigates the challenges of player security, the decision to limit Cheuko’s presence on the field— raises questions about the effectiveness of current measures in safeguarding high-profile athletes like Messi.

The league must balance security protocols while addressing the unique demands— posed by such iconic players and ensuring their safety in a dynamic environment.
