Mexico claims 10th Gold Cup title after defeating United States

Edson Álvarez became Mexico’s hero as his header secured a 2-1 victory against the United States in the Gold Cup final at NRG Stadium in Houston.

Chris Richards gave the United States an early lead in the fourth minute with a header that crossed the goal line. However, Raúl Jiménez equalized before halftime with a precise shot that goalkeeper Matthew Freese couldn’t reach.

After scoring, Jiménez paid tribute to Diogo Jota — his former Wolverhampton Wanderers teammate who died with his brother in a car accident a few days ago.

Alvarez secured Mexico’s victory with a header from a set-piece situation. The goal was initially disallowed for offside but was awarded after VAR review.

Mauricio Pochettino’s team — playing without several key players due to injuries and club commitments — had to settle for runner-up position. This marks the last competitive match for both teams before co-hosting next year’s World Cup.
