Mexican President Urges US to Avoid Immigration Raids at Gold Cup Match

Claudia Sheinbaum, Mexico’s President, has called on United States authorities to refrain from conducting immigration raids during the Gold Cup match in Inglewood, California — where the Mexican national team will face the Dominican Republic tomorrow.

This appeal comes following recent immigration raids in the Los Angeles area — which have sparked protests across major cities.

“We don’t believe that at any soccer match there will be any immigration action. We call for none to be taken by ICE,” Sheinbaum stated during her press conference.

As a security precaution, the Mexican national team has relocated from downtown to Long Beach. Mexican consulates have established specific protocols to assist citizens who might be detained.

The US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has affirmed that their presence is solely to secure major sporting events — as they routinely do for similar occasions. Mexico will continue their Gold Cup group matches in Arlington and Las Vegas.
