Mexican President criticizes Chicharito’s controversial statements on gender roles

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has strongly criticized soccer player Javier “Chicharito” Hernández over his social media posts that were deemed demeaning to women.

The 37-year-old Chivas striker posted several videos on Instagram that sparked controversy — he called for women to “allow themselves to be led by men” and accused them of “eradicating masculinity.”

“Chicharito is a very good soccer player, but when it comes to his opinion on women… he still has a lot to learn,” Sheinbaum said at a press conference.

Mexico’s all-time leading scorer is currently injured and has missed the first two matches of the Apertura tournament. His performance since returning to Mexican league last year has been underwhelming — scoring just two goals in 25 matches.

The Mexican Football Federation has a code of ethics that provides sanctions for members making offensive or discriminatory statements, but neither they nor Chivas club have yet responded to this incident.
