Daniil Medvedev Stunned by Bonzi in Wimbledon First-Round Exit

The 2025 Wimbledon Championships delivered a major upset on Day 1 as French underdog Benjamin Bonzi shocked world No. 4 Daniil Medvedev, eliminating the former finalist in the first round in four compelling sets.

The final score read 6–4, 3–6, 7–6(5), 6–3, with Bonzi, currently ranked No. 116, producing the performance of his career to oust one of the tournament favorites under the bright lights of Centre Court.

“It’s unbelievable,” said a visibly moved Bonzi.

“I came in with nothing to lose. I trusted my shots and played with heart from the first point.”

Medvedev, known for his calm demeanor and strong return game, struggled to contain Bonzi’s aggressive baseline play and pinpoint serving. Despite taking the second set, the Russian was visibly unsettled, losing control in the third-set tiebreak before surrendering the fourth.

The defeat marks one of Medvedev’s earliest Grand Slam exits in recent years and throws the bottom half of the draw wide open. For Bonzi, who came into the tournament with little pressure and low expectations, the win is his first against a top-five opponent—and perhaps the biggest statement of his career so far.

The result stunned fans and analysts alike, especially given Medvedev’s previous success at Wimbledon, where he was a finalist in 2023 and considered a legitimate title contender this year.

As Bonzi moves on to the second round, questions now surround Medvedev’s form and consistency in major tournaments. Meanwhile, the Frenchman is quickly becoming the surprise story of Wimbledon 2025.
