Mechanical Issues Force Denny Hamlin to Withdraw from Chicago Practice

Denny Hamlin faced serious setbacks during practice session at Chicago street circuit. The No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota experienced mechanical issues — emitting smoke and leaking oil before completing a single full lap.

“As drivers, we want to be in control. We want to be in control of our result. It’s disappointing when mechanical issues stop you from that, especially on a track where it’s important to get experience,” Hamlin told TNT Sports.

The 2025 season appears unfavorable for this veteran driver — he previously experienced technical failures at Texas Motor Speedway and Kansas Speedway. The Chicago circuit itself has an unpleasant history for Hamlin, with unsatisfactory results in the past two years.

Due to missing practice time, Hamlin must start Sunday’s race from the back position — a major challenge considering the complex characteristics of Chicago’s street circuit.
