McLaren Formula E to cease operations after 2025 season

McLaren Formula E team will shut down operations in September 2025 after unsuccessful efforts to find a buyer. This decision comes as McLaren shifts focus to the World Endurance Championship with their Hypercar project.

Team principal Ian James previously attempted to maintain the team’s championship position by seeking new ownership. Despite links to several manufacturers — including Hyundai — no deals materialized.

The team, which formerly operated as Mercedes, has undergone several significant changes — relocating from Mercedes’ Brixworth facility to a unit at Bicester Heritage. They also transitioned to become a customer team using Nissan powertrains since the Gen3 era.

Sam Bird and Taylor Barnard must now seek new teams for the upcoming season. Barnard, a rookie showing impressive performance this season, is likely to attract interest from teams with available seats. Bird, who secured the team’s only victory in Sao Paulo last year, brings valuable experience after competing in Formula E since its inaugural season.
