McLaren Drama: Piastri Nearly Crashes into Norris at Austrian GP

Internal competition at McLaren came under spotlight again after Austrian GP incident — Oscar Piastri nearly crashed into teammate Lando Norris while battling for the lead at Red Bull Ring circuit.

Following an impressive start passing Charles Leclerc, Piastri stayed close behind Norris throughout first stint — tension peaked when the Australian driver locked up and nearly hit Norris’s rear at Turn 4.

“Intense. I hope it was good watching, because it was pretty hard work from the car,” said Piastri who finished second behind Norris.

McLaren team, currently leading both constructors and drivers championships, allows their drivers to race freely — but within the boundaries of ‘Papaya Rules’ established late last season.

“I am very proud of how our two drivers raced today,” Team Principal Andrea Stella stated. “We want to give our drivers the possibility to express their talent, but within principles we have built together.”

Piastri acknowledged his mistake after the race — his championship lead over Norris now reduced to 15 points.
