Matildas secure 3-0 win over Slovenia in Joe Montemurro’s debut

The Australian women’s national team secured a 3-0 victory over Slovenia in Joe Montemurro’s first match in charge — marking a positive start to his tenure.

Emily Gielnik opened the scoring for the Matildas in the third minute — capitalizing on Slovenia’s failure to clear the ball. Despite periods of unconvincing play, the hosts managed to extend their lead late in the match.

Holly McNamara scored her first international goal in the 86th minute with a free header — followed by Hayley Raso’s strike a minute later from outside the penalty area.

“It was a nice test to see how we’d go after three sessions. I’ve never been in this situation where I’ve had three sessions with a team before a game,” said Montemurro.

Goalkeeper Teagan Micah delivered an impressive performance with several crucial saves — particularly in the second half when Slovenia created multiple clear chances. This victory provides valuable momentum for the Matildas ahead of the Women’s Asian Cup.
