Mathew Baker — a young defender of mixed Indonesian-Australian descent — has solidified his choice to represent Indonesia U-17 national team despite offers from the kangaroo country. The 15-year-old player inherits Indonesian blood from his mother, while his father is from Australia.

Though eligible to represent both nations, Baker decided to stay loyal to the Garuda emblem — a decision that proved right as he became coach Nova Arianto‘s key player since the ASEAN Cup U-16 tournament in Solo.

The Melbourne City player showcased his best abilities in the 2025 Asian Cup U-17 Qualifiers — scoring the winning goal in a 1-0 victory against Kuwait in the opening match. His achievements grew more impressive by joining Melbourne City’s U-21 team at such a young age.

With his rapid development and international exposure, Baker is now considered one of the most promising young defenders in the region — a potential cornerstone for Indonesia’s future at the youth and senior levels.
