Mary Earps Shocks England Team with Retirement Ahead of Euro 2025

In a surprising turn of events, Mary Earps has announced her retirement from the England women’s national team, just six weeks before Euro 2025 in Switzerland, as reported by ESPN.

The 31-year-old goalkeeper’s decision stems from a growing challenge to her position by Hannah Hampton, which reportedly made her uncomfortable with the prospect of being a backup keeper for the upcoming tournament.

“This is a difficult decision that I’ve carefully considered. Now is the right time to step aside and give the younger generation a chance. Winning Euro 2022 was the best moment of my life,” said Earps.

Throughout her career with the Lionesses, Earps earned 53 international caps, playing a pivotal role in England’s Euro 2022 victory and their impressive run to the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup final.

England head coach Sarina Wiegman expressed her disappointment:

“Mary has been a vital part of our journey. We’re sad to see her go but we fully respect her choice.”

With Earps stepping down, Hannah Hampton will take over as England’s No. 1 goalkeeper at Euro 2025, backed by Khiara Keating and Anna Moorhouse.
