Gerald Vanenburg, head coach of the Indonesia U-23 national team, has explained why he did not call up two talented young players for the 2025 ASEAN Cup U-23.

Marselino Ferdinan (20) and Rafael Struick (22) were left out of the squad, despite still meeting the age eligibility criteria for the tournament.

According to Vanenburg, both players have been prioritized for the senior national team, which will compete in the Fourth Round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup Asian Qualifiers, scheduled for October.

“They’re not here because they are with the senior national team. Right now, the most important thing is for Indonesia to qualify for the 2026 World Cup,” said Vanenburg.
