The incident occurred on lap two while Marquez was leading the race. The Spanish rider lost control and crashed at Turn 10. However, according to official MotoGP data, the red flag had been waved seven seconds prior to the crash — meaning the race was already halted before his fall.

This sparked speculation about possible rule manipulation in favor of the six-time world champion. Yet, under MotoGP regulations, because the red flag came first, Marquez was legally allowed to restart with a repaired bike.
