Malaysia U-23 faces major pressure in ASEAN Cup after opening defeat

Malaysia U-23 national team faces an unfavorable situation in the 2025 ASEAN Cup U-23 — their opening match defeat against Philippines has left them stranded in third place of Group A.

With a competition system that only advances two best teams to semifinals — the Young Tigers squad is now under pressure to secure victories in remaining matches.

Coach Ziad El Basheer emphasized the importance of the upcoming match against Brunei Darussalam.

“For us, victory against Brunei is important before meeting Indonesia U-23 national team,” said El Basheer.

Malaysia U-23 players’ morale has been shaken after the disappointing opening result — making the Brunei match a crucial moment to restore team confidence before facing Indonesia.
