Maarten Paes’ position in Indonesian national team threatened after Emil Audero’s arrival

Maarten Paes — Indonesia’s first-choice goalkeeper since September 2024 — now faces tough competition to maintain his position.

The FC Dallas goalkeeper didn’t get playing time in the last two matches against China and Japan, after previously appearing in eight consecutive World Cup 2026 Qualification games.

This situation emerged after PSSI naturalized Emil Audero Mulyadi — a Juventus academy product — who immediately showed impressive performance in his debut against China.

“Emil proved to be decisive in the 1-0 victory over China thanks to his various saves, including stopping opponent’s powerful shot with his left hand in the second half,” said PSSI source.

Paes’ appearance streak was previously halted due to card accumulation suspension, opening an opportunity for Audero to prove his quality as main competitor for Indonesia national team goalkeeper position.
