Lyon faces relegation to Ligue 2 due to financial troubles

According to the French Professional League (LFP) announcement, seven-time Ligue 1 champions Olympique Lyon, owned by American businessman John Textor — faces relegation to French second division due to financial issues.

The National Directorate of Management Control (DNCG) made this decision after examining the club’s €175 million debt — without a clear plan for reduction. Textor’s attempt to transfer funds from Brazilian club Botafogo was rejected by regulators.

Lyon recently received €42.5 million from Rayan Cherki’s transfer to Manchester City, and its owner also sold 43% stake in Crystal Palace for $254 million. However, these measures failed to convince DNCG.

The club that reached Champions League semifinals in 2020 — plans to appeal the decision. Lyon finished sixth this season after being eliminated from Europa League by Manchester United in quarter-finals.
