Luis Chávez suffers ACL injury before Gold Cup quarter-finals

The Mexican Football Federation has confirmed that Luis Chávez suffered a right anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury during training ahead of the Gold Cup quarter-final match against Saudi Arabia.

“The Mexican national team informs that Luis Chavez left training yesterday due to a right knee injury. Today, the player underwent an MRI, which confirmed a torn right anterior cruciate ligament. We wish Chavez a speedy and successful recovery,” stated the Mexican Football Federation’s official release.

The Dinamo Moscow midfielder previously played actively in the Gold Cup group stage — starting against Costa Rica and entering as a substitute against Suriname.

Coach Javier Aguirre must now rely on several replacement options to partner with key midfielder Edson Álvarez:

  • Marcel Ruiz
  • Erik Lira
  • Carlos Rodríguez

Mexico advanced to the Gold Cup knockout stage as Group A winners with seven points, while Chávez is expected to be sidelined for approximately six to nine months for ACL injury recovery.
