Liverpool Captain Niamh Fahey Announces Retirement At Season End

End of a decorated career

Niamh Fahey, captain of Liverpool Women, has officially announced that she will retire at the end of this season.

The 37-year-old defender, who has been a lifelong Liverpool supporter, has played a total of 123 matches in the Women’s Super League since joining in 2018. Appointed captain in 2020, Fahey was instrumental in leading Liverpool back to the top division.

A legacy of silverware

Fahey’s career has been filled with major achievements. She was part of Arsenal’s 2008 domestic treble-winning side and also won a league and cup double with Chelsea in 2015. Across her career, she has won four WSL titles and five FA Cups.

“It’s hard to summarize into words the emotions that I feel as I’m retiring. All I can say is how fortunate I feel to finish it all off at my girlhood club, Liverpool FC,” Fahey shared.

Final appearances with Liverpool

Fahey will bid farewell to Anfield during the Merseyside derby this weekend, before concluding her professional playing career in the season finale against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
