Lionesses on brink of Euro 2025 exit after shocking defeat

According to reports from Zurich, Switzerland, the Euro defending champions — England women’s national team — find themselves in a critical situation following their 2-1 defeat to France in the opening match.

Georgia Stanway — England’s midfielder — emphasized that her team must perform at their best against Netherlands on Wednesday. “If we’re not good enough, we don’t deserve to continue in this tournament,” she stated.

“We have to be brave and ruthless. You can see, even in spells against France, that urgency and desperation towards the end of scoring,” said Stanway. “We need that for 90 minutes.”

Coach Sarina Wiegman faces a new scenario — this is her first loss in 12 European Championship matches as manager. Group D containing France, Netherlands, and Wales was predicted to be a challenging group.

England and Netherlands have met twice since the World Cup final:

  • Netherlands won 2-1 in Utrecht
  • England won 3-2 at Wembley

Stanway emphasized the importance of returning to their traditional style of play. “Sometimes it’s about blocking out the noise, getting on the pitch and getting stuck in,” she added.
