Lion City Sailors Begin Preparations for AFC Champions League Final

Lion City Sailors have begun their preparations to transform Bishan Stadium into an ideal venue for the AFC Champions League Two final. This decision was made after Jalan Besar Stadium was deemed unsuitable, and the National Stadium was unavailable due to an upcoming concert by Lady Gaga.

Upgrades to Bishan Stadium for Increased Capacity

Bishan Stadium, which currently holds 2,800 spectators, will undergo significant upgrades, including the addition of temporary stands on the North, East, and South sides of the stadium. These improvements will increase the stadium’s capacity to 10,000 fans. The AFC has granted provisional approval for these changes, pending a final inspection set for early May.

Renovation Work Delayed by Singapore’s General Election

Renovation work at Bishan Stadium could only begin after Singapore’s general election in late April, as the stadium had been used for campaigning. Forrest Li, the Sailors’ chairman and newly appointed FAS president, expressed excitement about the upcoming final:

“This final is not just a milestone for Sailors — it’s a celebration of Singapore football. We can’t wait to see the stands packed and the nation rallying behind the team,” said Li.

Collaboration with Football Association of Singapore

The Sailors will collaborate with the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) and Sport Singapore to complete the necessary upgrades. These include enhancing media workspaces, organizing committee facilities, improving pitch conditions, and upgrading lighting.
