Lewandowski Steps Away from Poland National Team Due to Coach Conflict

Robert Lewandowski has stunned the football world by announcing a temporary withdrawal from the Poland national team — a decision that will remain in effect for as long as Michał Probierz remains head coach.

The 36-year-old Barcelona striker made the announcement via social media, citing a breakdown in trust with the national team coach.

“Considering the circumstances and the loss of trust in the coach, I have decided to resign from playing for the national team while he remains in charge,” Lewandowski wrote.

Fallout follows missed international window and loss of captaincy

Lewandowski had already opted out of the current international break, citing physical and mental fatigue. In response, Probierz removed him as captain, handing the armband to Piotr Zieliński of Inter Milan.

The development marks a rare public rift between a player of Lewandowski’s stature and national team management.

Recent form and fitness behind club success

Lewandowski recently returned from a hamstring injury that had sidelined him during Barcelona’s Champions League semifinal run. Upon his return, he scored twice to help the club secure the La Liga title.

Despite regaining form, Lewandowski declined call-ups for Poland’s upcoming matches against Moldova and Finland, sparking speculation about deeper tensions within the squad.

End of an era — for now

With 158 caps and 85 goals, Lewandowski is Poland’s all-time leading scorer and one of its most iconic players. His decision puts a pause on a distinguished international career that began in 2008.

Michał Probierz, who took over from Fernando Santos in 2023, guided Poland to Euro 2024, but the team was eliminated in the group stage, intensifying scrutiny around his leadership.

Whether Lewandowski will return to the national fold under different management remains to be seen — but for now, one of Europe’s great international careers is on hold.
