Leong Jun Hao surpasses Lee Zii Jia as Malaysia’s number 1 men’s singles

Leong Jun Hao now holds the status as Malaysia’s number one men’s singles player — displacing Lee Zii Jia thanks to his improved world ranking to position 25.

The 25-year-old player has recorded impressive achievements by defeating Jonatan Christie at Indonesia Open 2024 and Singapore Open 2025, while Lee Zii Jia dropped to world rank 28 due to a lengthy absence from injury.

“Pressure is definitely there, but for me, I see it as a challenge. It’s a form of motivation for me to keep moving forward,” Leong stated when met at the Academy Badminton Malaysia, Bukit Kiara.

Under the guidance of Danish national coach Kenneth Jonassen, Leong is preparing for a series of major tournaments:

  • Japan Open (15-20 July)
  • China Open (22-27 July)
  • World Championships (25-31 August)
