Leah Williamson: Sweden is a fantastic team for Euro 2025 quarter-final

Leah Williamson, England national team captain, shared her views about the Swedish team who will be their opponents in the Euro 2025 quarter-finals in Zurich.

Sweden — who managed to collect perfect nine points in Group C including an impressive 4-1 victory over Germany — has proven themselves as formidable competitors in this tournament.

“Sweden are a fantastic team, they’re relentless in the way they go about their game. I think they sort of avoid the expectation of every tournament, and that’s slightly disrespectful considering they always show up,” said Williamson.

The two teams have an interesting match history — England defeated Sweden 4-0 in the Euro 2022 semifinals, but two meetings since then have ended in draws.

Georgia Stanway, England midfielder, added her perspective about the challenge ahead:

“They’re tough, they’re physical, they’re more direct. We have lots of experience against them, but this is a different tournament and our focus is on ourselves.”
