Leah Williamson reveals anxiety ahead of Euro 2025

Leah Williamson — England women’s team captain — has revealed her anxiety ahead of Euro 2025 after missing last year’s World Cup due to an ACL injury.

Despite leading England to Euro 2022 victory, Williamson was forced to skip the World Cup where her team reached the final but lost 1-0 to Spain. After returning to play in January 2024, she is now ready to lead The Lionesses against France in the opening match in Zurich.

“I’ve held some anxiety until this moment because I really wanted to be here with the team. Playing in another country to represent your own — that’s a special moment,” said Williamson.

With Millie Bright absent to focus on physical and mental wellbeing, Williamson is likely to partner with either Alex Greenwood or Esme Morgan in defense. Greenwood could earn her 100th cap if she appears against France.

Meanwhile, forward Lauren James, who recently recovered from a hamstring injury, is expected to receive more playing time after featuring for 30 minutes against Jamaica last week.
