LaLiga president Tebas harshly criticizes FIFA’s new Club World Cup format

Javier Tebas, LaLiga president, has renewed his sharp criticism of FIFA’s new Club World Cup format currently taking place in the United States.

During an event at ESADE Business School Madrid, Tebas emphasized his goal to remove this competition from the football calendar — a tournament he claims has no place in the national league ecosystem.

“My objective is clear — there will be no more Club World Cups. There’s no room for a competition that only channels money to the same clubs and players,” stated Tebas.

After watching 25 minutes of Chelsea’s 2-0 victory over LAFC, Tebas compared the match intensity to that of a preseason game.

The 2025 Club World Cup features 32 teams, including Spain’s Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid — a format scheduled to occur every four years.

Regarding Barcelona’s situation, Tebas confirmed the Catalan club must still comply with LaLiga’s financial regulations before registering new players, including goalkeeper Joan García whose €25 million release clause has been activated.
