Kluivert Faces Dilemma Ahead of Indonesia vs Japan Match

As the decisive final match of Group C in the 2026 World Cup Asian Qualifiers approaches, Patrick Kluivert finds himself facing a tricky situation regarding team selection.

The match, set to be played at Panasonic Suita Stadium, Osaka, could significantly influence Indonesia’s FIFA ranking, despite both Indonesia and Japan already securing qualification to the next round.

Idzes and Verdonk on yellow card risk

Jay Idzes and Calvin Verdonk are both on yellow cards, meaning another booking would suspend them from the upcoming Fourth Round of the qualifiers.

This puts Kluivert in a difficult position: risk his starters to compete against Japan, or rest them and rotate the squad.

Balancing points and long-term planning

Although the outcome of the match won’t affect advancement, Kluivert has expressed his intention to secure points — particularly to improve Indonesia’s FIFA ranking, which could impact future seedings.

“We want to compete and not simply defend,” said Kluivert.
“But we also have to think smart — about the next stage.”

The match against Japan, played in their home ground, will serve as a tactical test for Garuda Squad, and an opportunity for emerging talents to prove themselves should Kluivert choose to rotate.
