Patrick Kluivert Acknowledges Indonesia’s Heavy Defeat to Japan

Patrick Kluivert, the head coach of the Indonesia national team, has admitted that his team was thoroughly outplayed after their 0-6 defeat to Japan in the final Group C fixture of the 2026 FIFA World Cup Asian Qualifiers third round, held at Panasonic Suita Stadium, Osaka.

Despite fielding a squad that did not feature all of their key players, Japan maintained total control throughout the match, exposing Indonesia’s defensive weaknesses and lack of creativity in attack.

“We must acknowledge this defeat and take it as a lesson. Japan are on another level,” Kluivert said post-match.

Japan dominate despite player rotation

The Blue Samurai took an early lead and never looked back, with Daichi Kamada scoring a brace. Goals also came from Takefusa Kubo, Ryoya Morishita, Shuto Machino, and Mao Hosoya.

Indonesia, meanwhile, failed to register a single shot on target. Goalkeeper Emil Audero faced relentless pressure and was left vulnerable by a disorganized defense. Japan finished the match with 71% possession, 21 total shots, and 11 on target — while Indonesia managed no attempts at all.

Focus turns to fourth round in October

Despite the crushing loss, Indonesia has secured qualification to the fourth round, a significant achievement under Kluivert’s tenure.

“We don’t yet know who we’ll face next — could be Saudi Arabia or Qatar,” Kluivert explained. “But one thing is clear: we must prepare better.”

Kluivert emphasized that a comprehensive evaluation of the team’s performance is essential before the fourth round kicks off in October. Tactical discipline, physical condition, and mental resilience are among the areas he plans to strengthen.
