K-League lifts foreign goalkeeper ban after 26 years

K-League — South Korea’s top football competition — has made a historic decision by lifting the ban on foreign goalkeepers that has been in effect for 26 years.

The policy implemented since 1999 — aimed at developing local goalkeeper talent — is now officially terminated and opens opportunities for international goalkeepers to pursue careers in the league.

Previously, K-League only allowed foreign players for non-goalkeeper positions, which has been utilized by two Indonesian national team players:

  • Asnawi Mangkualam who plays for Ansan Greeners and Jeonnam Dragons
  • Pratama Arhan who strengthens FC Suwon

The lifting of this ban — effective from this season — provides new opportunities for international goalkeepers including those from Indonesia to develop their careers in one of Asia’s best leagues.
