Judge Resigns from Maradona Death Trial Over Documentary Controversy

Judge Resigns from Maradona Death Trial Over Documentary Controversy

Judge Julieta Makintach has officially resigned from the trial investigating the death of Diego Maradona, after it was revealed that she appeared in a documentary about the case.

Prosecutor reveals judge’s role in film during trial opening

The controversy erupted when Prosecutor Patricio Ferrari, presented footage from a documentary covering the moments surrounding Maradona’s death — with Makintach appearing as one of the central figures.

The video was shown just before the trial began, prompting questions about the judge’s neutrality.

Main defendant requested her removal

Leopoldo Luque, Maradona’s personal doctor and the main defendant in the case, had filed a motion requesting Makintach’s dismissal. His lawyer, Julio Rivas, also disclosed that the BBC had reached out for interviews regarding the documentary.

“This undermines the fairness of the trial,” said Rivas.

Diego Maradona passed away 4.5 years ago while receiving home care in the suburbs of Buenos Aires, shortly after undergoing surgery to treat a hematoma between his skull and brain.

Seven medical professionals still face prison time

A total of seven health workers are still on trial, charged with alleged negligent care. They face a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison if convicted.

With Makintach’s resignation, the remaining two judges must now decide whether to resume or reset the suspended trial, which was initially set to last one week.
