Joseph Kosinski reveals advanced technology behind new Formula 1 film

Joseph Kosinski, director of the upcoming Formula 1 film, reveals the differences in filming technology between this work and Top Gun: Maverick.

Top Gun: Maverick utilized six fixed cameras — four aimed at the actor in the back seat and two cameras above the pilot’s shoulders. Meanwhile for the F1 film, the production team collaborated with Mercedes Formula 1 to develop 16 different camera mounting positions on custom racing cars.

A new camera system called Carmen — a Sony prototype with Venice-quality but one-third the size — is mounted in front of the driver. Recorders, batteries, and transmitters are placed below the radiators and integrated into the car body.

Brad Pitt and Damson Idris — without doubles — drive the cars themselves at speeds up to 180 miles per hour. The production team can control camera focus in real-time from the circuit center through antennas installed around the track.

The Formula 1 film will premiere internationally in late June, followed by North American release two days later.
