Jonas Eidevall experienced his first defeat as San Diego Wave coach when his team fell 2-1 to defending champions Orlando Pride — a result that reflects the ongoing team building process.

“We need to have a developing mentality. We must grow stronger physically, technically, and mentally every week,” said Eidevall who joined about three months ago.

The team is in transition after a difficult 2024 season, where they finished 10th and lost several key players. Major changes occurred with only three players from last season’s starting lineup remaining.

Despite the loss, there were several positives to note — dominant ball possession and impressive performances from young players. The 19-year-old Chiamaka Okwuchukwu even scored on her debut as a substitute.

“I’m pleased with the mentality we have in the squad. Chiamaka is a great example of that,” said Eidevall after the match.

Sporting director Camille Ashton emphasized the team’s ambition for this season:

“Our goal is to make the playoffs in November. That’s something everyone across the organization would say and feel strongly about.”

The Wave’s performance, while not yet reflected in results—signals potential growth as the new squad finds chemistry under Eidevall’s leadership. Early glimpses of promise from emerging talents and a clear developmental mindset suggest a foundation is being laid for long-term success.
