Japan vs Indonesia: Indonesian National Team FIFA Ranking on the Line

This Tuesday afternoon (June 10th), Indonesian national team coach Patrick Kluivert’s strategy faces its toughest test against Group C leaders Japan in their 2026 World Cup Asia Qualifier. The match takes place at Panasonic Stadium Suita in Osaka, Japan.

While the result has no bearing on qualification – Japan has already secured their World Cup spot as group winners, and Indonesia must advance through playoffs – this match is crucial for another reason: it will impact the FIFA rankings for both teams.

Japan has announced they will rotate their squad, resting key players who have played heavily recently. This gives Indonesia a good spot to field their strongest lineup and maximize their chances.

Nevertheless, the Indonesian team must remain vigilant. Under coach Hajime Moriyasu, Japan consistently employs an effective attacking style, regardless of his squad composition.

So, how could this match affect both teams’ FIFA rankings?

Three scenarios could play out

  1. Japan Win: Japan would gain roughly 3.4 points, potentially rising to 17th in the FIFA rankings. Indonesia would lose about 3.4 points, potentially dropping three places to 120th.

  2. Draw: Japan would lose around 9.07 points. Indonesia would gain about 9.08 points, reaching roughly 1167.05 points and potentially climbing to 114th or 115th.

  3. Indonesia Win: Japan would lose roughly 21.57 points. Indonesia would gain around 21.58 points, jumping to roughly 1178 points.

This major victory could propel Indonesia as high as 110th, marking a fantastic personal achievement for The Garuda.

*(Note: FIFA has not yet updated rankings to include Indonesia’s June 5th match against China. Our calculations used the maximum estimated points gain from that win (+7) and project from Indonesia’s current ranking of 124th, which would rise to an estimated 117th once the win is factored in.)*
