Jakarta’s padel sport tax plan draws criticism from local parliament

Suhud Alynudin, member of Commission C of Jakarta Regional Parliament, criticizes Jakarta Provincial Government’s plan to impose tax on padel sport facilities — a sport currently gaining popularity among the capital’s residents.

“In my opinion, Jakarta Provincial Government should not rush to impose tax on padel sport activities. Let these activities first contribute to citizens’ economic growth,” stated Suhud in Jakarta.

While acknowledging that padel sport typically attracts middle to upper-class enthusiasts — evident from expensive court rental and equipment costs, padel falls under the category of taxable sports facilities.

Under the same regulation, other sports facilities subject to tax include:

  • Tennis courts
  • Fitness centers
  • Swimming pools

Suhud Alynudin‘s main concern lies in the potential negative perception — that the government is too quick to capitalize on a growing sports trend in society.
